What a day

August 31, 2010

Today saw

a) Football transfer deadline day – which in the end was a total non-event.  Which is a shame. cos I quite like the skycopter thing.

b) KP being dropped from the England squad but tweeting  (and quickly deleting) the following before the announcement

“Yep….Done for the rest of the summer!! Man of the World Cup T20 and dropped from the T20 side too.  It’s a fuck up!!  Surrey have signed me for… (then the tweet cut off, he really needs to learn to count to 140) “

Now to me that reads like it was supposed to be a private message in reply to someone in which case he’s just a technological fuckwit.

c) Middlesex’s Owais Shah finding out from a journalist rather than from the club itself that he had been released.

d) Gus Fraser issuing an apology for aforementioned incident

e) Geoff Miller having a reciprocal pop at KP

f) Rogers signing for Middlesex, Eoin Morgan signing a new contract for Middlesex

g) More spot-fixing related stories – low level stuff about the investigation and the 3 players in question being rested for the tour match in Taunton.

The more observant of you will remember me saying that I’d warmed to KP but if he signed for a county other than Middlesex, I reserved the right to change my mind.

I have changed my mind.  Tempestuous cock.

I’ve said it elsewhere, but as a Surrey man, I am really quite concerned and unimpressed about the Pietersen business. It could be a great thing – KP rediscovers his form, Surrey start the long comeback. However, I fear that it is more likely that it will all end up with the destruction of any nascent team spirit Surrey might (might) be nurturing.

And how an arrogant Saffer will react to having a small boy as captain (a small boy who, if murmurings at Surrey are correct, got the job mainly because of his dad), God alone knows.

I have a suspicion the Surrey thing is short term and was arranged by the ECB. Hence the delays to the squad announcements, time needed to get the deal sorted out. KP looked shot in the Pakisran series, they’ll be hoping some county championship time will be better for him than a few quick thrashes. Always assuming he’s happy to be involved.
